  13. Seven Cities of Gold'. This game is
  14.  
  15. a product of the Bunten brothers and
  16.  
  17. follows on the heels of their highly
  18.  
  19. successful game, 'MULE'. Mule was
  20.  
  21. selected as the best Strategy Game of
  22.  
  23. 1983 by INFOWORLD Magazine and Best
  24.  
  25. Multi-player Game of 1983 by ELEC-
  26.  
  27. TRONIC Games. The Bunten brothers have
  28.  
  29. once again displayed their design
  30.  
  31. talent in creating this new game.
  32.  
  33.    'Seven Cities' recreates The Age of
  34.  
  35. Discovery and Spanish Conquest in the
  36.  
  37. New World (1492-1540), plus totally
  38.  
  39. new worlds to conquer! The 'World
  40.  
  41. Maker' program is a sophisticated
  42.  
  43. model of geological, ecological and
  44.  
  45. cultural factors. For example, it
  46.  
  47. takes into consideration the concept
  48.  
  49. of 'cultural diffusion' in the loca-
  50.  
  51. tion and level of civilization of
  52.  
  53. communities. The levels of civiliza-
  54.  
  55. tion range from small, poor hunting
  56.  
  57. socities to empires built on advanced
  58.  
  59. agricultural foundations. The 'World
  60.  
  61. Maker' program is a major advance in
  62.  
  63. the art and science of game design.

  65.    The standard game permits a novice,
  66.  
  67. journeyman, or master player to play
  68.  
  69. the role of a Spanish Conquistador.

  71. In this role, the player must win

  73. support from the Spanish Crown, outfit
  74.  
  75. an expedition, and explore new worlds.

  77. The player is faced with many decis-

  79. ions throughout the game: how many
  80.  
  81. ships, men, and goods to take; build

  83. forts or missions; trade with or con-

  85. quer tribes, or search for mines or

  87. important geographical features. Each

  89. decision is important in the overall

  91. success of the player in winning the

  93. game. Victory is determined by find-

  95. ing at least 50% of the tribes, land,

  97. and special features hidden in the

  99. New World by the year 1540. In the

  101. course of doing all of this, you can

  103. be promoted or chastised by the King,
  104.  
  105. gain or lose great wealth, or die! All
  106.  
  107. done in very exciting and realistic
  108.  
  109. detail!

  111.    The game disk comes beautifully
  112.  
  113. packaged with a command card and a
  114.  
  115. brief, twelve page manual of player
  116.  
  117. tips, instructions, joystick control
  118.  
  119. information, and bibliography. The
  120.  
  121. disk is two sided; side one contains
  122.  
  123. the game program and side two contains
  124.  
  125. the 'World Maker' program. The player
  126.  
  127. must use a blank, formatted disk to
  128.  
  129. transfer the 'world' created from
  130.  
  131. the 'World Maker' program. The whole
  132.  
  133. process takes about fifteen mintues to
  134.  
  135. do. However, once a world is created
  136.  
  137. it only takes a short time to load
  138.  
  139. the game program and insert the world
  140.  
  141. disk.
  142.  
  143.    'Seven Cities' has some very nice
  144.  
  145. features worth mentioning: music of
  146.  
  147. the period, high resolution graphics
  148.  
  149. (you love the natives and the maps
  150.  
  151. are accurate and beautiful to behold);
  152.  
  153. hidden villages in the journeyman and
  154.  
  155. master level games, and a routine to
  156.  
  157. save games in progress. One of its
  158.  
  159. most outstanding features is its im-
  160.  
  161. pressive re-creation of the awe in-
  162.  
  163. spiring vastness and danger of two
  164.  
  165. continents. This feeling overcame me
  166.  
  167. on my first, unsuccessful, voyage
  168.  
  169. around the tip of South America! This
  170.  
  171. game will certainly bring down its
  172.  
  173. share of awards this year.
  174.  
  175.    The only drawback to 'Seven Cities'
  176.  
  177. is the time it takes to play. This
  178.  
  179. will not be a problem for those gamers
  180.  
  181. who like to learn a little bit about
  182.  
  183. history, economics, and geography.
  184.  
  185. While there is plenty of mystery and
  186.  
  187. action in this game, 'Arcaders' will
  188.  
  189. probably not have the patience to
  190.  
  191. learn its subtleties. It takes just
  192.  
  193. the right balance of force, friend-
  194.  
  195. ship, manpower, and planning to win
  196.  
  197. this game. It possesses much play
  198.  
  199. value and should be a part of your
  200.  
  201. software library!
